Best time to visit

the Ecuadorian Andes

The Ecuadorian Andes can be visited year-round, thanks to the country’s equatorial location. Instead of traditional seasons, the Andes experience two main climatic periods: a drier season and a wetter season — each offering distinct landscapes and travel experiences.

What to Expect Year-Round

  • Temperatures vary depending on altitude, typically ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F)
  • Weather can change quickly — layering is essential
  • Strong sun exposure at high altitude, even on cloudy days

Dry Season (June – September)

This is generally considered the best time for outdoor activities in the Andes.

  • More sunny days and clearer mountain views

  • Ideal for hiking, trekking, and high-altitude exploration

  • Cooler temperatures, especially in the mornings and evenings

  • Excellent conditions in areas like Cajas National Park, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo

This season is perfect for travelers seeking dramatic landscapes, crisp air, and active adventures.

Wet Season (October – May)

The wetter months bring a different kind of beauty to the Andes.

  • Greener landscapes and vibrant ecosystems

  • Occasional rain showers, often in the afternoon

  • Milder temperatures during the day

  • Fewer crowds and a more tranquil travel experience

This is an excellent time for cultural travel, photography, and immersive experiences in local communities around Cuenca and the southern Andes.
